Kaveh Newmen is a criminal defense trial attorney and the Named Partner of Not Guilty Law Group. A first-generation Iranian-American and the child of immigrants, Kaveh understands the weight of what’s at stake when someone’s freedom, family, and future hang in the balance—because he grew up watching his own family navigate those same pressures. Not Guilty Law Group was founded on a simple principle: everyone deserves a strong advocate who truly understands what’s at stake.

Kaveh’s path to criminal defense was forged in the trenches. He began his career at the San Diego County Public Defender’s Office, where he represented indigent defendants in custody—interviewing clients in county jails, state prisons, and federal detention centers, and fighting for people the system too often overlooks. That experience built the foundation for everything he does today: aggressive, strategic, no-excuses advocacy for people who need a real fighter in their corner.

He went on to sharpen his litigation skills at Edlin Gallagher Huie + Blum, handling complex commercial litigation, before founding Newmen Law, P.C., where he built a practice spanning criminal defense, civil litigation, immigration, and entertainment law. His criminal defense work has produced numerous acquittals and favorable outcomes for clients facing the most serious charges—from homicide and attempted murder to armed carjacking and domestic violence.

Notable Cases

Kaveh served as co-counsel in People v. Ferguson, the nationally covered murder prosecution of sitting Orange County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Ferguson. The case drew widespread media attention from the Associated Press, the OC Register, the Daily Journal, and outlets across the country. Kaveh co-filed the successful vicinage motion that transferred the trial from Los Angeles back to Orange County, presented the defense’s theory to the press during trial, and helped secure a hung jury—preventing conviction on second-degree murder charges despite an 11-1 jury split favoring the prosecution.

He has also served as defense counsel in high-profile armed carjacking cases in Orange County, including People v. Hopgood-Otero, a multi-count armed carjacking and assault case near Fashion Island in Newport Beach, where he negotiated a plea disposition accepted by the court over the prosecution’s objection. His work alongside veteran criminal defense attorney Cameron J. Talley—a former Orange County homicide prosecutor—has included successfully reducing attempted murder charges down to assault with a deadly weapon and winning outright dismissals through aggressive self-defense strategies.

His defense practice has also achieved numerous acquittals for high-profile clients in the music and entertainment industries—cases requiring both innovative defense strategy and absolute discretion. He has managed legal compliance for some of the largest music festivals in the United States and resolved multimillion-dollar disputes for prominent clients across California.

Approach to Presentation

We built Newmen Law on a simple premise: business owners deserve legal counsel that understands business. That means we focus on outcomes, not billable hours for their own sake. We give you direct access to experienced attorneys. We explain your options plainly. And we structure our fees so you can plan around them, whether flat-rate, hourly, or monthly retainer.

We also believe your attorney should be part of your team, not just someone you call when something goes wrong. That is why our Fractional General Counsel program has become one of our most popular offerings: companies retain us on a flexible monthly basis for ongoing legal support, getting the benefit of in-house counsel without the in-house cost.
